DESIS, DE Shaw pvt ltd a Herculean First Round

Hey Friends ! welcome back to our blog ! I know its been a while but I thought I could share our experience at the placement test today. The Criteria for our batch was 75% MCA aggregate but no surprises, it was raised to 80%. Out of a batch of 112 only 6 were eligible.

First things first, the profile was for SysAdmin and the package was 13-14 Lakhs/annum. We had to carry along 2 copies of our CV's and photographs along with a "pencil" only. The very flashy  presentation began at sharp 9:15 AM today on 16-07-2013 and  as always presented the good side of DESIS, their activities, benefits to the employees etc. They have a very casual work environment with no dress code.

We then had to move to the CS dept for the test. Note : Please ensure you get a notepad for rough work. The first round was a written test which had 3 categories at one stretch without any gaps with a constraint of 25% negative marks for each incorrect answer.
1. Pure High 5 Quantitative Aptitude - 20 questions - 20 mins
2. Programming - C,C++,Java,Data Structures, DBMS - 20 questions - 20 mins
3. General Technical questions - 10 questions - 10 mins

1. Quant: The first category was the most difficult among the others. The questions were mainly focused on
a) Profit & Loss
b) Time & work
c) Time & distance
d)  Ratios
All these questions were really tough and you will not find them in any of the R.S Agarwals or the Apti Mithras. 1 min per question was really not sufficient for us and could hardly attempt 10-12 questions.

2. Programming: The second category was a little better compared to quant. Most of my fellow batch mates found it easy but I must admit, I really found that there were many hard questions at start and few easy ones towards the end. Most questions were
a) Guess the output of the program
b) One Page program of C,C++ - arrays, pointers, structures, Strings
c) Data Structures (Many) - Linked list, Trees(Many), Postfix evaluation, Heaps, Tree Traversal
d) Java - 2 questions one on packages(import), threads
e) DBMS - 1 questions on Delete query along with table data to guess the output row

3. Technical: This category was easier compared to the other two. It had general knowledge technical questions that concentrated on:
a) Microsoft Products (2-3)
b) Cloud Computing
c) Operating System (Mobiles)

Some of us did not attempt all the questions, while the others did. However, unfortunately none from our branch were selected for the next round. But it was indeed a learning experience to prepare even better for the next companies. I hope this post was useful; any questions ? Feel free to comment below !

7 Placed And The Battle is Still On !

Fortunately 7 seniors have already been placed out of several companies that visited our campus. Some of them are :
Success Factors
IBM
D.E. Shaw
National Instruments
Thoughtworks
Novellus
Cerner
Informatica

Mr. Sundar Raj, the placement co-ordinator has aced the placements and has received a record breaking package of 14 Lakhs pa.
Some of the major companies expect criteria of 60%, 75% throughout. Others have criteria like 60% in MCA. Most of us do not satisfy the criteria because of the blunder in our 12th. However, very few companies stress on 12th scores.
The placements begin from July 2nd soon after the 4th semester and go on till the end of 5th semester. The dream companies visit first, followed by the other mass recruiters. The package varies from 3 - 10 Lakhs pa.
However keep in mind that we all are competing against the BE's when it comes to placements. There are a hand full of companies that recruit only MCA's.

Some Quality Time

Since the time we entered college, we never had an opportunity to interact with our seniors. However after one yr, our HOD arranged a session with some of our successful seniors who have already been placed in various companies.
The session was for an hour and it was very informative indeed. They shared with us their experiences while facing the interviews and also guided us to take placements seriously so that we are pre prepared for the big battle.
It was indeed a pleasure to have such good seniors and we all realized their importance and need. They also advised us to start preparing for the placements by referring some useful websites such as :

http://www.indiabix.com/
http://www.freshersworld.com/
http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm

and take up some tests which will help us in the 5th semester.  I hope this info will be useful for all of us in the near future.
